Simple aftercare guidance for carpets and vinyl flooring

1. Why care matters

New flooring will look better and last longer when it is cared for properly. This guide explains simple steps customers can take after installation and highlights normal characteristics of carpets and vinyl flooring.

2. After your carpet is fitted

• Vacuum gently after fitting to remove loose fibres and help the pile settle.
• Avoid dragging furniture across the carpet. Lift furniture where possible and use suitable furniture cups or protectors.
• Keep newly fitted rooms well ventilated while the flooring settles.
• Some loose fibres are normal with new carpets and should reduce with regular vacuuming.

3. Vacuuming guidance

• Twist and other cut-pile carpets usually benefit from regular vacuuming with a suitable vacuum cleaner.
• Loop pile carpets should normally be cleaned with suction-only vacuuming to reduce the risk of snagging loops.
• Deep pile and Saxony carpets may show footprints and vacuum marks more easily and may require extra care.
• Always check the manufacturer’s care instructions where available.

4. Pile flattening, shading and appearance changes

Carpet is a soft textile product and its appearance can change with use. Normal changes may include pile flattening, shading, tracking, pressure marks and differences in appearance where light hits the pile from different directions. These are not usually manufacturing faults.

Pile reversal, sometimes called shading or watermarking, can occasionally occur and may appear as lighter or darker patches. It is not usually caused by fitting and is generally not covered by manufacturer wear guarantees unless specifically stated.

5. Stains and spills

• Act quickly. Blot spills with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth. Do not rub aggressively.
• Avoid using harsh chemicals, bleach or unsuitable cleaning products.
• Test any cleaning product in an inconspicuous area first.
• For serious stains, consider using a professional carpet cleaner.

6. Furniture marks and pressure dents

Heavy furniture can leave dents or pressure marks in carpet. These may improve over time but may not disappear completely. Use furniture cups or pads where appropriate and avoid placing very heavy items directly onto soft carpets for long periods.

7. Pets, claws and loop pile carpets

Loop pile carpets can be more prone to snagging from pet claws, sharp objects or dragging furniture. If you have pets, please consider this carefully when choosing a carpet style.

8. Vinyl flooring care

• Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit that can scratch the surface.
• Clean with a damp mop and a suitable pH-neutral cleaner.
• Avoid steam cleaners unless the manufacturer confirms they are suitable.
• Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, rubber-backed mats that may stain, and dragging appliances or furniture across the floor.
• Use protective pads under furniture and take care with castor chairs.

9. What is not usually covered by warranties

Manufacturer warranties vary, but they commonly exclude normal wear and tear, pile flattening, shading, staining, burns, scratches, dents, damage from unsuitable cleaning products, pet damage, water damage, misuse, poor maintenance or issues caused by unsuitable subfloors or declined preparation work.
